"If you are depressed, you are living in the past, If you are anxious you are living in the future, if you are at peace you are living in the present"
-Lao TZU-
These words are as true now as they were when they were written thousands of years ago. They also are a great explanation for DBT as a program.
DBT is an intensive therapy program with the primary goal of reducing suffering and building a life worth living. We do this in many ways but it all starts with being more present to our current life, knowing what we want and knowing how to achieve our goals in the most effective way.
DBT was originally created for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD. Since its inception DBT has been proven effective in the treatment of many mood regulation disorders including depression, anxiety, Bipolar I and II. DBT has shown itself to be especially effective in the treatment of self harm and suicidal thoughts.
DBT is an intensive program. It requires a one year commitment. A true DBT program consists of a weekly individual therapy session, a weekly DBT Skills Group and the availability of phone coaching.
Counseling Centers of Michigan provides DBT treatment for both adults and adolescents. DBT Skills groups are held for adults on Tuesdays between 7pm and 9pm. Adults also have the option of attending group on Thursdays between 12pm and 2pm. Adolescent DBT Skills Group is held between 12pm and 1:30pm on Saturdays.
The first step in beginning DBT is to schedule a meeting with members of the DBT team to see if DBT is appropriate for you.
